Research Profile

Terry obtained his BSc in Statistics with First Class Honours, MPhil in Risk Management Science, and PhD in Medical Sciences from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. During his PhD, he served as a visiting research fellow at the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University of Maryland, Baltimore. Since 2014, he has been devoted to real-world big clinical data research to understand the epidemiology, natural history, assessment, treatment, and clinical outcome prediction of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) through cutting-edge statistical analyses and data analytics. He established one of the largest cohorts of patients with CHB who achieved hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seroclearance with long-term follow-up (J Hepatol 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023). He is also a Principal Investigator in the VCTE-Prognosis study, an international multicenter cohort study currently involving 16 centers with 18,000 patients with MASLD, focusing on the use of vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) and other non-invasive tests for long-term clinical outcome predictions (JAMA 2024). He has over 180 publications in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Hepatology, Gut, Gastroenterology, and Hepatology.

His achievements include receiving the Young Investigator Award of the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver in 2018, 2022, and 2023, as well as being selected for the Early Career Investigator Award in Clinical/Translational Science by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases in 2020, and The Best Poster Presentation Award: Viral Hepatitis - Clinical by the European Association for the Study of the Liver in 2024.
